Anointing of the Sick

Picture
Anointing of the Sick is not necessarily "the Last Rites."  Someone who is ill in body, mind, or spirit could truly benefit from this great Sacrament of healing and forgiveness.

Our hope for salvation in Jesus is BOTH in body and soul.  The holy oil of the sick is an important piece as oil has always been a great healing remedy for the body.  It was always thought to give strength.  But for the soul, the Sacrament offers forgiveness too.  In the case of someone who is not sick, Reconciliation is the means of forgiveness, but for someone who is ill, whether conscious or not, the Church tries to show a profound respect for the body, while also caring for the soul.  And for the dying, the Sacrament certainly prepares the soul for the entrance into Eternal Life.

If you or a loved one is hospitalized, please be sure to call the parish office to let us know, or at least ask the hospital's Spiritual Care office notify us.  By law, they cannot call us just because you say you are from St. Lawrence O'Toole.  You must give them permission.

In an emergency, please call the Parish Office at (708) 748-6090.
