Eucharist

Picture
"At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood. This he did in order to perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages until he should come again, and so to entrust to his beloved Spouse, the Church, a memorial of his death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a Paschal banquet 'in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.'" (from the Catechism of the Catholic Church).
The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life and is more commonly referred to as Holy Communion - it is also the second of the three Sacraments of Initiation. The term comes from the Greek by way of Latin, and it means "thanksgiving." It is used in three ways: first, to refer to the Real Presence of Christ; second, to refer to Christ's continuing action as High Priest (He "gave thanks" at the Last Supper, which began the consecration of the bread and wine); and third, to refer to the Sacrament of Holy Communion itself.
Many people refer to the Mass as "the Eucharist," but such a use is incorrect. The Mass is made up of two parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Mass is more than simply the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Eucharistic Preparation

Preparation for first reception of Holy Eucharist is a consecutive two year cycle.  Instruction begins early in Grade 1 and continues with greater intensity and emphasis in Grade 2.  First Eucharist is received in early May of Grade 2.
Reception of the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation are necessary before First Eucharist.
Any child, regardless of age or grade level, who wishes to receive Holy Eucharist will be expected to participate in a two year preparation and attend Mass with the Parish Community each Sunday.
The Third Commandment of the Church tells us to "Keep Holy the Sabbath Day".  Mass attendance is an essential aspect of the instruction and preparation required for reception of the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  Parents, as models of faith, are expected to bring their children to Mass each weekend.
